To celebrate the debut of the film Scarface to the bluray format, fans were given a rare opportunity to design Scarface-inspired artwork using classic Tony Montana images from the film. Fans voted on the favorites and the winners will have their artwork featured as exclusive art cards in the limited edition bluray. The link is the gallery of the winners. Congratulations to Andrea Mandrino of Huntington Station for representing the Long Island creative community with their winning design.

A man holds a woman hostage and updates his facebook status during a standoff with the police. The worst part of this story is the comments from some of his facebook friends encouraging his behavior.
In 1971 Carolyn Davidson a student at Portland State University was approached by Phil Knight to do some freelance graphic design work for a Japanese sneaker company Knight was associated with. (at $2 an hour) Eventually Knight decided to form his own company. (Nike) He approached Davidson and asked her to design a logo for the new company. She submitted to Nike a bill for $35 for the logo design. (For 17.5 hours of work designing the swoosh.)
The story does have a happy ending. Ten years later Nike threw a party for Davidson and gave her stock in the company. (valued at over $600,000 today)

The article makes some good points but in my opinion focuses too much on a cost analysis. At some point working from a coffee shop involves fighting for outlets or feeling like you are wearing out your welcome. Without even looking at a dollar and cent analysis the main value coworking holds over the coffee shop is people, a community of professionals.

Looking for a coworking space? The following sites are good resources for those interested in checking out a coworking space. These sites can also be useful if you want help finding a space when traveling. All of the sites allow you to list and search for free. If you know of a space listing site and want me to add it, just send me a message.
This site has over 1300 spaces in over 300 cities. You can search by city, neighborhood and even the type of vibe you are looking for. They have a map view that shows spaces and also listings that apear below the map. They also have their own coworking space in Brooklyn, NY.
This site has both traditional working spaces, along with coworking and other non-traditional office spaces listed. You can search by city and by type of space. It lists spaces suited for startups, telecommuters, and other independent professionals. One of the unique features of this site is it has a pretty robust and free floor planning tool.
Also has a map view but does not appear to be as popular as some of the other sites on this list.
http://wiki.coworking.info/w/page/29303049/Directory
A wiki dedicated to coworking. I recommend contacting any spaces you intend to visit prior to your visit. Some of the listings in the directory are in the planning stage or no longer exist. This site also has a ton of information about coworking.
Free to list and free to search.
Another free listing service, they allow you to filter by feature. (Kitchen, wifi, pet friendly etc.)
https://groups.google.com/group/coworking
Not a listing service but if you ask a question about where to find a space chances are someone will help you out. Also a good place to find out more about coworking.
While other professional sports leagues are shying away from having athletes use social media because of the potential of its misuse, the UFC is embracing social media. Players in the NFL for example have been fined as much as $20,000 for violating social media policies. Dana White, UFC president has gone the other way by offering bonuses ($240K a year allotted for these bonuses) for his athletes that make the best use of twitter.
This past weekend I visited the facebook page for the UFC and noticed they would be streaming a live feed of the preliminary fights for their PPV event. (UFC 131) I clicked the like page for the UFC in order to access the stream. Two things really stood out to me. The first being the stream quality was as close to HD as you will probably get for a live event. ( It Looked close to 720p on my 26 inch full hd lcd monitor.) The second being there were no commercials. By doing this it felt more like a free preview and less like the disjointed mess that occurs when you put commercials into a live sporting event. As an added bonus you are able to fastforward/rewind the stream.
The moral of the story is offer value, listen to your consumer and don’t be afraid to think outside the box when using social media to promote your business.

In the mood for burgers? Below is a list of some of the fast food burger joints close to The Business Corners Coworking Facility in Hauppauge, NY.
Recommended-
FIVE GUYS- (601 Veteran’s Highway Hauppauge, NY 11788)
In my opinion the best fast food burger joint close to our coworking space is Five Guys. It is less then a ten minute drive and is well worth the ride. There is a burger king commercial that asks if you were to open your own burger place what would it be like. Well my burger place would be closer to what Five Guys offers then any other fast food food burger place in the area. Burgers are made to order and there is no extra charge for toppings. (large list see menu below) Fries are cooked with peanut oil. They don’t offer extensive menu choices but what they do offer is quality food at relatively reasonable prices. Go here if you are in the mood for hamburgers or hotdogs. They also have free peanuts.

Other Burger places-
Mcdonalds-
There are approximately 7 within 5 miles. The closest is a two minute drive from our facility. (On Commack Rd) Most of the Mcdonald’s in the area offer free wi-fi. Mccafe coffee offerings are not bad. Although they tend to skimp on the serving sizes as compared to Dunkin donuts and Starbucks.

Wendy’s-350A Motor Parkway Hauppauge, NY 11788
There are about 5 or 6 Wendy’s in the area. The closest is within walking distance of our facility. Around Lunch time the motor parkway location can be extremely crowded, especially if using the drive thru.

Burger King- 505 State highway 111 Hauppauge, NY 11788
There are only about 2 store locations in the area. The closest is about 1/2 mile from our coworking space. Burger King is one of the few fast food locations in the area that offers onion rings.

White Castle- 786 Suffolk ave. Brentwood, NY 11717
The closest white castle is about 2 miles away in Brentwood. It is about a 5 minute drive from our coworking space. There website often has coupons so check it out before heading out. White Castle is known for there sliders. (mini burgers) This is the only fast food place on the list to integrate google street view in there location finder. (Why more sites don’t use it not really sure.)

Sonic- 1380 Deer Park Ave North Babylon, NY 11703
There is currently only one Sonic on Long Island or even the whole state of New York. (Located in North Babylon) The location is approximately 15 minutes away from our facility. Since opening in the Spring of 2011 there is typically a wait. Sonic is unique in that they have car hops on rollerskates bring your food to your car. (This location also has a drive thru) They feature a pretty extensive drink menu. If you are strictly in the mood for burgers, it might not be worth the drive/potential wait time as there food is just average. Go here if you are in the mood for one of their specialty frozen drinks.

Nathans- 314 Commack Road Commack, NY
There are only 2 Nathans in close proximity to our facility. The commack road location is attached to a ralph’s ices. The other location is in the Tanger outlet center in Deer Park. Both locations are about a ten minute drive. While Nathans serves burgers they are better known for their hot dogs. The fries are also very good. The tanger store is a combo store.

I have found that with so many networking events on Long Island it can be difficult to track what events are coming up. One of the problems is if you google “networking Long Island”, you typically only get individual organizations and not a comprehensive list. (Let alone a calendar view) I recently met Paul Klass CEO of Whitewater Axiom. He has compiled a rather comprehensive list of various network groups/events on his website. I found it to be very helpful and thought I should share it as a very valuable resource for anyone who networks on Long Island. His site lists traditional/non-traditional networking events in a calendar format, every chamber of commerce on Long Island (on one site link), upcoming tradeshows, and many other useful links for businesses on Long Island. His site can be found here- www.whitewateraxiom.com
This list of is compiled from personal experience and numerous web sources (listed at end of post) Definitely check out the links to get a more detailed look at why coworking is a great lifestyle choice for so many people. Feel free to share the list.
